Why We Love Campy B-Movies

When the SyFy channel premiered Sharknado 2 in the U.S., it was a smash hit. More than 9 million people tuned in, but all those people weren’t tuning into to watch for artist cinematography or superior acting. They wanted to see a goofy, outlandish, mediocre acted B-movie.

What Sharknado proves is that we love bad movies. But why? What keeps drawing use back to watch movies like this? If you look into it, there are a number of reasons we love bad movies. First, and most importantly, is the Internet. We can now watch free movies online, and many of these titles, like Jack Hunter and The Star of Heaven are available online for free. Here are a few reasons the B-movie is once again a favorite of audiences:

1. Access to Free Movies

Before, B-movies were relegated to the bottom shelf at the video store. But with the Internet, there’s been a shift. B-movies are now available to stream online for free, and viewers now have more access than ever. This is driving renewed interest in B titles like Death of a Ghost Hunter. There are countless titles available and many of the best in campy movies are just a click away.

2. Better Promotion

Not only can we watch movies online, we can share them with our friends. People are Tweeting, making Facebook updates and blogging about their newly found favorite campy films. There are dozens of blogs dedicated to B-movies, and because of this, audiences are helping these guilty pleasure movies go viral. Today, more people than ever are aware of this genre of movie.
